Hildebrand Ranch is a moderately rolling trail. The loop is ~5.8mi, including a stretch through and along the edge of a housing development. The neighborhood section is mostly wide, smooth, gravel paths, with a couple of rolling hills, and some fairly long, moderate, climbs and descents. The single track is mostly rolling, with a few somewhat technical spots, but otherwise fairly easy.
Weather and Seasons
There is little vegetation and the trails are exposed. Thus, it's best to avoid the trails there when it's hot, windy, or during thunder storms. You should also avoid the trails when they're wet because the trails can turn to heavy, wet clay (you should avoid all front range trails when they're muddy). The best times to use it are fall through spring. It's a great place for night time running, especially during a full moon. The trails aren't that technical, so it's a good place to run over the winter. It's fun for snowshoeing with several inches of snow.
Driving Directions
It's in the far SW part of the metro area, on Deer Creek Cyn road, between Wadsworth and the mouth of the canyon. http://g.co/maps/8wptd
Running Routes
We generally run clockwise for a couple of reasons. First, it gets us through the neighborhood early. There are a couple of key turns in the neighborhood. Thus, we like to hit them when everyone is fairly close together and easy to follow. Second, it provides a good warm-up before any real climbing.
Clockwise: Start up the trail from the lot. Part way up the hill, take the first left. Continue for ~1mi into the neighborhood. Click on the maps below to follow the route through the neighborhood, ~1.75mi. Then it's ~3.2mi of rolling, not too technical, single track. Faster runners can add an additional out-and-back, at the end, so that they finish with the slower runners.
On Thursday nights, DTR has different routes at each run. The different routes are designed so that we can accommodate runners of different speeds and still start/finish at about the same time. See more info on choosing the appropriate route for you.
